Fun under the Destin sun

fun in the sun

Taking a quick trip to Destin, FL and need ideas of places to go and things to do?

I got you covered!

As I have mentioned previously, I am a Sagittarius. I am not bringing this fact up just because. I bring up this point because it truly represents me as a person when I decide I want to go. Heading to Destin was a last minute, random ass decision (like most of my trips lately have been).

What can I say, I am a spontaneous adventurer by heart, LOL. I stayed in Destin for 3 days, I had a ball and I got burnt up so, as a tip to everyone (I mean everyone) don’t forget to pack your sunscreen!

STAY in Destin-

I started off my time in Destin, checking into the newer Homewood suites hotel. This brand is a part of Hilton, and I was able to locate them right on the Hilton app. I highly recommend becoming a Hilton Honors member, as you stay book rooms for your trips, you accrue points that can add up to free hotel stays. As always, I compare the prices listed on website vs the app, especially when trying to use points (sometimes, they be trying to play with me on those prices), just to be sure I was getting the best deal for what I wanted.

I chose Homewood suites in case I decided that I wanted to cook some fresh seafood as their suites are equipped with full kitchens and I really do mean FULL kitchens- from a full size fridge to a dishwasher to an oven, even all the utensils needed to do your thang!

My only cons about the room were that the bathroom was really tight and faced the bed, although there was a door in between the toilet/shower, the space was just very limited.

The bed was very comfortable, but there was a fire alarm that flashed a green light very brightly at night, this became very annoying when trying to fall asleep. For a more detailed hotel review, check out “Stay comfortably at Homewood Suites in Destin“.

FOOD/DRINK in Destin-

If you are a lover of seafood, I am sure we could go on and on about the fresh seafood to be found along the coast of Florida but based on the places I went, these are the places you have to check out:

Boshamp’s Seafood and Oyster House

The Original Destin Snapper
The Original Destin Snapper

This restaurant is on the pricey side, but it offers an enjoyable experience on the marina with multiple bars and a charming little beach. I started with the Calamari, which came with banana peppers, wild summer greens, asiago, harissa, and a garlic ginger mayonnaise. Unfortunately, I had to send it back since the calamari was very rubbery. Nevertheless, I went ahead and ordered dinner, which was the dish named ‘The Original Snapper Destin.’ This dish featured jumbo lump crab, Gulf shrimp, mashed red early potatoes, braised local greens, lemon butter, and béarnaise honey roasted nuts. It made me forget about the calamari, the wait time of 90 minutes for a table—they wanted to make me wait—and delivered flavors that melted on my tongue, hitting every note my mind could describe. Simply put, this dish was so good.

You might be wondering about the 90-minute wait part, so let me address that. Boshamp’s does not allow reservations to be changed or canceled (as of July 2022). When I originally asked to be seated, they informed me that the waitlist was 90 minutes, and that was at 5 pm. I didn’t stay and left for the bar, but later on, when I passed by, I decided to check if there were any open seats available at the bar—and got lucky. YAY!”

Acme Oyster House– This restaurant is a little further down off the beacon path, but they have great fresh oysters and really good fried seafood. I recommend the Chargrilled oysters as they were delicious, and I am not even an oyster person! I also tried the jambalaya, the alligator bites, and the fried crab claws; let me tell you, I was not left disappointed with any food item. The jambalaya shocked me because the flavor was on point, the alligator bites were crispy and fresh and the fried crab, although crispy, they were not overdone so when dipped in the garlic butter (I had to ask for this) it brought a smile to your face. As far as drinks, I tried the Hurricane, but it was more like a light rain shower because I didn’t get anywhere with that.

McGuire’s Irish Pub of Destin

This is truly a must-go-to place if you’re tired of seafood (or if you just want to switch things up!). McGuire’s is a Destin staple. The happy hours are fantastic, and the food never disappoints. There were many great bartenders there, but Ashley and Quay were particularly impressive each time I visited for a drink, especially during Margarita Madness and Double Shot Martini nights. The best server I had was Annalisa—she was very sweet and always had a smile on her face. They have their own butcher shop downstairs, so the steaks are authentic, the burgers are freshly ground, and the fried chicken is said to be one of the best in Destin.

Louisiana Lagniappe

I want to start by saying this place is pricey but OVERALL, the food was beautiful, and the Louisiana flavors were delicious. This is more for a date night as it is white tablecloth, but it is a must try if in the area. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any pictures here as I really wanted to enjoy the moment, but I highly recommend the Crescent City Fettucine that comes with jumbo shrimp and the Grilled Grouper Louisianne with fresh jumbo lump crabmeat in seasoned butter.
