A Daring Dive into Odyssey Italian Restaurant

Odyssey Italian Restaurant Cheesecaske

A Foodie Review

Do you ever get that warm, fuzzy feeling thinking about a plate of a homemade pasta dish? Me too!

My favorite type of pasta is fettucine. I just love how pasta can be such a simple dish but you can spruce it up depending on the type of sauce created or the proteins and veggies used.

I discovered Odyssey Italian Restaurant in Denver, because I was doing just that. My brain and stomach conspired against me when craving a plate of Italian pasta or homemade lasagna.

Quick Snapshot of Odyssey Italian restaurant:

  • Cuisine: Sicilian Italian
  • Vibe: Cozy and Rustic
  • Must-try dish: Highly recommend the Vegetarian Lasagna (you won’t miss the meat) or the Lamb Shank (it falls off the bone!) Also, all dinner is served with homemade bread with olive oil, balsamic reduction & Italian herbs.
  • Price Range: Very reasonably priced ($$)
  • Location: 603 E 6th Ave, Denver, CO 80203
  • Menu: Something for everyone, check it out here https://odysseyitalian.com/

Although I have not been to Italy or Sicily yet, Odyssey Italian restaurant & wine bar surprised me. It is located in a Victorian style rustic house on 6th Ave in Downtown Denver, Colorado. They are open daily from 4PM – 10PM and luckily, although I found this place on a last minute crave, I was able to enjoy the experience here sitting at the bar, however if you prefer to sit at a table, I highly recommend setting a reservation.

 Odyssey Italian Restaurant

Odyssey Italian is a unique experience because it incorporates Sicilian cuisine. This is not your average Italian place. In fact, Sicilian cuisine is a subset of Italian cuisine, it has its own unique flavors, techniques, and traditions that have been influenced by the various cultures that have occupied the island.

Main differences include:

  1. Geographical Influence: Sicily is an island located to the south of the Italian peninsula. Its unique location in the Mediterranean has made it a crossroads of various cultures, including the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, and Spaniards. This has given Sicilian cuisine a distinct flavor profile and a combination of culinary techniques.
  2. Seafood: Given its island status, Sicilian cuisine features a lot of seafood. Tuna, sardines, anchovies, and swordfish are particularly popular.
  3. Sweets: Sicily is famous for its desserts. Cannoli, cassata, and granita are some of the best-known sweets from the region.
  4. Rice and Grains: Due to historical and geographical reasons, rice and certain grains like couscous (influenced by North African cuisine) are more prominent in Sicilian dishes than in many other parts of Italy.
  5. Vegetables: Eggplants, tomatoes, peppers, and olives are staple ingredients in many Sicilian dishes, reflecting both the island’s fertile land and its Mediterranean climate.
  6. Citrus: Thanks to its sunny climate, Sicily is a major producer of citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and citrons. These are used in a variety of dishes, both savory and sweet.
  7. Spices: In contrast to the often subtler flavors of many traditional Italian dishes, Sicilian cuisine is known for its bold use of spices, again reflecting its diverse cultural influences.
  8. Cheese: While cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano and mozzarella are popular all over Italy, Sicily has its own specialties, such as Pecorino Siciliano.
